How to paint your furniture

For us, painting furniture is like painting cabinets. The same process and materials are used for either application. So, in a nutshell…

  • We start with removing all hardware.
  • Then, we move to removing all doors and drawers.
  • Once we remove these items, we start the cleaning process.
  • After they are clean, we sand them.
  • Now, clean them once more.
  • Get the primer ready! Start priming.
  • The primer, we use white, will show every knick, ding, crack, gap, etc., that needs to get fixed.

Now that we have done the initial prep work, filling holes, etc., we re-sand everything and give it another coat of primer.

What color can you use to repaint your furniture?

Just like painting your cabinets, you can select whatever color you want. These cabinets went from a natural distressed pine to a semi-gloss color that we matched to the kitchen cabinets.

The paint we use to paint cabinets is the same for furniture. GREAT PAINT! But there are some things to consider:

  • Softer woods like pine can be dented easily, causing paint to chip (the paint is harder than the wood).
  • The paint must be cleaned just like cabinets. (vinegar and water – no harsh chemicals).
  • The furniture must be in good order (not falling apart).
  • Damaged MDF can be fixed, but it can also be costly.

Grasscloth Wallpaper in a Dining Room

Have you ever tried panels of wallpaper, specifically grasscloth wallpaper panels? This is a simple but a great way to bring character to any room.

With this clients designer (Jans’ Design in Geneva, IL) some great grasscloth wallpaper was selected for us to install. A grasscloth to work with the existing colors of the room. The first day is always the toughest as we had to measure out the room to fit the layout design. With the use of a laser level, tape measure and a roll of tape we were armed and ready to install.

After getting things where they needed to be we masked off the wall then primed the areas to be wallpapered and installed the clients grasscloth.

With the wallpaper installed now, we moved onto the decorative trim. Originally we painted the trim an off-white to match the ceiling but once up, it just stuck out too much. With the trained eye of Jan, a new color was selected, then she picked a glaze color to match the grasscloth wallpaper.

With everything installed, we took one close up to show the wall covering, trim, and glaze.  All is well, great color choice! We look forward to our next project with Jan, (you should too).

We also took a short video of how we glazed the trim should you want to see that as well.

Get New Cabinets!

As Fall approaches, the most popular call we are receiving is about doing something with Kitchen cabinets.  Customers are tired of the honey oak stained cabinets, tired of the white cabinets that came with the house or want their pantry or island to stand out from the rest of their room.  What are your options?

1st question is, What do you want? The last 2 customers we had were looking to save money in remodeling their kitchen. There was nothing wrong with their cabinets, so the decision was made to refinish oak cabinets to a white glazed look, new tile backsplash, and granite counters. This was 50% cheaper than tearing out a Kitchen and getting all new.

Do you have an island that you want to have a distinct look from the rest of your kitchen? Maybe you have a pantry unit that you would like to make stand out? This can easily be done as a solid color, distressed finish, or restained to another wood color.

We are using ML Campbell industrial wood finishing systems. This is a greenguard certified product. They are low VOC. They are non-yellowing, unlike oil-based products. They are the highest rated to withstand kitchen substances such as juices, vinegar, ketchup, coffee, boiling water, nail polish, naphtha, alcohol, wine, gasoline, TSP, and many more.
