Painting Kitchen Cabients

When my father heard we paint kitchen cabinets he about flipped! Especially cherry cabinets. That is a stigma some people have and that is ok, there is nothing wrong with keeping your cabinets in their natural state, but that is not for everyone.  When it is time to update the kitchen, for years the thought process was replacing the cabinets or refacing them. There were very few people that even considered painting them. Thanks to magazines, HGTV, and other home improvement channels, the negative stigma of painting wood cabinets is going away- as it should!

If I paint my Kitchen Cabinets-will it last?

This is a great question and one we receive weekly if not more. The answer is yes it will last. When or if you buy new cabinets for your home they are painted. The paint they use for their cabinets, is the same product we use when painting your cabinets.  We actually were trained by one of the manufactures some years ago to make sure we use it properly.  Which is why we can offer you a lifetime warranty on our work.

Important questions to consider:

  • Do you like the kitchen layout you have now?
  • Do you like the cabinet door style as well?

If so then why go through all the trouble of loosing the use of your kitchen for weeks on end when we can have your kitchen professionally spray painted in 5 days or less?

Our Process..

Painting Kitchen cabinets is a very specific niche- like painting automobiles- you want to pick the right company to do it, so it gets done right. There is a wrong way to have your cabinets painted- so be aware! The cabinet we use as stated above is made for kitchen cabinets. It is made to be washed, resist stains, and stand up to the rigors of kitchen use, it is one of the best products on the market and with a room that is used so often and makes the biggest impact for your home, it just makes sense to get the best. We are transparent in how we do things so that you know exactly what your getting, how we do it, and so you can compare us to the competition.

The Prep work:

  • We will cover and mask all non painted surfaces
  • All hardware will be marked and removed. We mark it so it goes back right where we found it.
  • Each door and drawer will get labeled so the also go back to where they came from
  • Using a cleaner and degreaser all surfaces get cleaned and scuff sanded
  • With a clean rag we wipe all surfaces clean
  • Every surface to be painted will be sprayed using Stix bonding primer
  • If you choose to fill gaps in the cabinets, we fill those gaps with caulk
  • There are places that may need to get filled from nails, or nicks which we also fill and repair
  • If needed we will use a shellac primer to block stubborn stains etc from bleeding through
  • Using 320 grit sandpaper we will sand the painted surfaces between each coat

The Painting process for your cabinets

The materials we mentioned above are true hybrid lacquers, not acrylic or latex paints. There is a difference! It is made for cabinets, it is ultra smooth, ultra durable and long lasting. All the paint is applied with a HVLP sprayer to ensure factory like finishes for your cabinets. Why would you want brush marks?

With Exhaust fans and air scrubbers we are different from most other contractors in that we also spray the boxes in your home. We want to deliver the best finishes on every surface.

  • We never thin the paint- we use the right primers and to the right equipment so you get the paint as it was intended to be used.
  • After a final inspection to make sure there are no gaps, holes, repairs needed etc, we do 1 more final scuff sand to ensure bonding and smooth finish
  • We spray 2 coats of the final paint, again sanding between coats of paint

The final steps

After the cabinets are painted and have dried, we bring them back to your home, we remove all the masking, return all the hinges, handles, and drawer and doors to their original location. We then do a cleanup and leave all paint for you at your home.

We take after photos- have you inspect all items, and ask for a google review!

Problems with Painted Cabinets

We have done a blog article on this as well, (top 3 problems with painted cabinets) but here is a summary of that article and this question. Most issues take place because of the prep work.

  • If the items were not sanded or cleaned correctly there could be a issue with adhesion.
  • If the paint was not cured long enough it can peel off or get damaged if trying to clean it.
  • Using chemicals to clean painted surfaces- ONLY use vinegar and water or an approved floor finish such as BOMA
  • If the person painting uses a brush vs spraying you see all the marks
  • Leaving wet towels or rags on painted surfaces- big no no.

Final thoughts on Painted cabinets

If you hire the right person using the right products, it is no different than having your can repainted. It will look great and last for years! We say that a kitchen cabinet job will last just as long as those cabinets you but already painted, we give the same warranty! The best part it is at a fraction of the cost. We have painted our own kitchen twice- the first time , 9 years ago, was a dark brown expresso color, recently we went to the color Cotton Balls as we are selling the house, to brighten it up.
